CConversations: Nuria Madrenas, Founder of Tacit Collective

WELCOME TO CCONVERSATIONS — PRESENTED BY THE CC EDIT

WHERE WE CONNECT WITH FELLOW CREATIVES AND INNOVATORS TO DISCUSS ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND THE PURSUIT OF CREATIVE ENDEAVOURS.

IN THIS CCONVERSATION WE CONNECT WITH NURIA MADRENAS, THE FOUNDER OF TACIT COLLECTIVE.

In this CConversation, we connect with Nuria Madrenas, an artist and the founder of Tacit Collective. Through her work as an independent artist, Nuria identified a disparity in the art world. This gap would soon fuel her entrepreneurial venture and lead her down the path towards creating Tacit, a collective that advocates for female artists.

Through connection, community, and art, Tacit Collective has become a leading space in the art world. Serving as an online art gallery and consultancy dedicated to female artists. Through their platform, they offer a collection of art from upcoming and emerging artists globally. Join us on this journey, where creativity and equality serve as a guiding force, carving new paths that redefine how we perceive and engage with the world of art and the curation space.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START TACIT COLLECTIVE, AND HOW DID YOU IDENTIFY THE SPECIFIC GAP IN THE MARKET FOR FEMALE ARTISTS?

Before starting Tacit, I was a freelance artist and was unable to find a suitable platform to sell my work. There was no middle ground between the oversaturated, entry-level marketplaces, and the world of bluechip art. Upon conducting more research, I was enlightened to learn of the disparity in the art industry between women and men, where art by women accounts for a mere 2% of the art sold. I was inspired to create Tacit to address this disparity, and offer emerging artists and collectors a new way to experience, buy, and sell art.

I became aware of the disparity through market research and also saw it in practice within major art institutions and galleries.

WHAT STRATEGIES HAVE YOU USED TO BUILD A STRONG NETWORK AND MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE ART AND CULTURAL SPACE? HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT SELECTING AND CONNECTING WITH FEMALE ARTISTS FOR TACIT?

I try to organically create meaningful connections with people in the industry that I have things in common with. Whether we have similar origin stories, inspirations, hobbies, etc. This has allowed me to connect with people in an authentic way, as opposed to a transactional relationship.

As far as the art selection process, we want it to be mutually beneficial for us and the artist. We want to ensure that they will reach an audience who is interested in their work, and they can leverage Tacit as an additional revenue stream. As such, we look for artists whose practice will resonate with our collectors and integrate seamlessly into the Tacit collection. Our hope is that you could pick any two (or three, or four!) pieces from the Tacit collection and they can coexist within the same space.

HOW DO YOU ENVISION EXPANDING TACIT’S REACH GLOBALLY, ESPECIALLY IN SUPPORTING FEMALE ARTISTS FROM DIVERSE CULTURAL BACKGROUND?

We are very interested in pursuing international opportunities to provide our artists with increased visibility. In order to do so, we seek to align ourselves with artists from all over the world to reach new audiences and stay abreast of exciting opportunities worldwide. We’re committed to supporting artists of all backgrounds, as we recognize the importance of diverse representations within art collections across both residential and commercial properties.

WHAT PERSONAL CURATION TIPS WOULD YOU OFFER TO INDIVIDUALS SEEKING TO BUILD THEIR ART COLLECTION, DRAWING FROM YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES AND INSIGHTS IN THE ART AND CULTURAL SPACE?

First and foremost, buy what you love. It may seem obvious, but you want to be collecting pieces that you feel like you *have* to have the moment you see them. This will ensure you’re collecting with intention, and that your collection will have longevity. The best collections are built over time - don’t rush it simply because you just moved into a new place, or you have empty wall space to fill. In order to build a collection with meaning, you want to buy pieces that will align with your style and values - and it may take time to find the right piece(s).

AS A THRIVING ENTREPRENEUR AND ARTIST WITH A DEMANDING SCHEDULE, HOW DO YOU CARVE OUT AND PRESERVE SPACE FOR YOUR PERSONAL CREATIVE AND ARTISTIC PURSUITS?

I am militant with my calendar! I deliberately carve out space for creative thinking, workouts, baking a fun recipe I found on TikTok, etc. This allows me to not feel guilty about taking time for myself and refilling my cup.

WHICH MEDIUMS OR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION SERVE AS CATALYSTS FOR BOTH YOUR PERSONAL ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS AND THE GROWTH OF YOUR BUSINESS?

Spending time with friends and family. Listening to podcasts. Going for a walk. I always find inspiration from hearing different perspectives and having conversations unrelated to business. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that rest is productive.
